New this month is a three-part blog article on the early days of Wilkesboro and two upcoming genealogy events.

Article:  Remembering the 1790s in Wilkesboro: Part 1

Article:  Remembering the 1790s in Wilkesboro: Part 2

Article:  Remembering the 1790s in Wilkesboro: Part 3

I wrote a 3-part series of articles based on pages that I found among the William Lenoir papers.  They are three pages of depositions are three pages of depositions given by some of Wilkesboro's oldest citizens in 1859 regarding the court case Welborn v. Finley.

Depositions were given by Mrs. Clary, John W. Reynolds, Hugh Jones, John Ashley Reynolds, Wesley Reynolds, Anthony Foster, John Rousseau, Gen. Samuel F. Patterson, Ben Clary, and William Smithey. They mention various birth and marriage dates, when people moved in to town, and the new Wilkesboro Hotel that opened in 1818.  John Ashley Reynolds married Robert Cleveland’s daughter Nancy in 1795!

Rockingham County Genealogy Swap Meet

On September 27, I am giving a seminar for the Genealogical Society of Rockingham and Stokes Counties in Mayodan, NC.  The seminar is called “Interpreting and Mapping Old Deeds”.  I’ll be talking about what land grants and deeds are, where to find the actual records, how to interpret them, and how to go about mapping them.  We’ll also look at lots of examples.  The event is from 9am to 3pm, and my seminar is at 10am.

Wilkes Genealogy & History Fair

The Wilkes Genealogical Society has announced a genealogy fair on Saturday, October 11 from 10am to 3pm.  As explained on the WGS Facebook Page, the event is free and open to the public.  “Local authors, lineage societies, family reunion organizers, among other organizations are invited to attend and set up. Materials will be available to purchase from the WGS as well as other organizations.”  I plan to be there, and I’m looking forward to it!
